The Challenge

Stop-motion animation is a powerful medium for fostering creativity, technical skills, and problem-solving in children. However, its high barrier to entry—due to fragmented tools, varying skill requirements, and complex processes limits engagement, especially for this age group.

Design Objectives

The goal was to develop an integrated stop-motion animation kit that:

  • Provides a structured yet flexible framework for creativity.
  • Supports varying skill levels without overwhelming or limiting engagement.
  • Bridges the gap between storytelling, art, and animation tools.

The Solution: Paper Puppets

A comprehensive stop-motion animation kit combining physical and digital tools, designed around a foundational story that children can personalize.

Key Features

  • Story Kickoff: Provides a starting point to engage kids immediately.

  • Story Builder: Breaks narratives into scenes, with pre-made pop-out characters and props for customization.

  • Flip Stage: A magnetized stage for structured scene setup.

  • Magni-Stands: Positioning tools for characters and props.
  • Flexi-Rig: Built-in rigging for smoother animation.

  • Paper Puppets App: Guided animation support tailored to each story pack.

The Process

Research & Insights

To uncover the problem, I conducted interviews and observations with:

  • Indie Animators (2)
  • Northwestern Animation Students (1)
  • DePaul Animation Instructors (2)
  • Elementary School Art Educators (4)
  • Children Engaging with Stop-Motion (8)

I benchmarked competitors in the market for creating stop-motion. However, none of the products spanned the full process from story creation to final production.

Two key insights emerged:

1. Varying Interests and Skill Levels:

Stop-motion involves multiple skill sets—storytelling, fabrication, and filmmaking—which can either enrich or overwhelm kids. Some children engage deeply with technical aspects like rigging, while others focus solely on storytelling or visual design.

“I try to talk to them about rigging and stuff... some kids really get that, and some kids, it's the last thing on their mind. So that's why it's not the easiest thing to teach.”
Katie P., 5th Grade Art Teacher

2. Disjointed Tools:

The process requires multiple disconnected resources—story creation, character design, set building, and filming—which can lead to disengagement.

Prototyping & User Testing

  • 3 iterations of the kit with usability studies.
  • Observed children interacting with prototypes to gauge engagement and intuitiveness.
  • Immersion at an animation studio to understand industry best practices.

“I think the options are nice. It’s like when you’re painting: if you just give me 3 colors I can just start painting versus if you give me all the colors I wouldn’t know where to start.”
- Zach, 5th Grader at FW Parker Elementary School

Feedback from educators and children reinforced the effectiveness of a structured yet flexible system, akin to a coloring book—providing a starting point but allowing creative freedom.

Viability & Future Opportunities

Paper Puppets has the potential to grow through:

  • Brand Partnerships: Collaborating with well-known storytellers to create engaging content packs.

  • Consumer Product Integrations: Offering sampler kits through everyday products, such as cereal boxes, to increase accessibility.

Conclusion

Paper Puppets redefines how children engage with stop-motion animation, transforming a traditionally complex process into an intuitive, guided experience that fosters creativity across all skill levels.
